Lion President Jack Edwards

As usual we had a busy August. We started off on the 3rd with our Chili’s fundraiser. We passed out hundreds of flyers during the Strauss Festival and had a good turnout. The club made about $270 on the fundraiser.  On the 6th Lion Bob Brewer and crew handled the Elk Grove Historical Society BBQ. We had our regular meetings and the board meeting. Our first meeting, on the 8th was at the Senior Center. Thanks Lion Brad and crew for the great tamale pie. We had a great crew to assist Lion Jim & Lion Don at the Senior Center Breakfast on Saturday the 13th. The board meeting on the 15th, my first as your new president, was well attended. Thanks to the Barn Cafe for providing refreshments. Our 4th Monday meeting on the 22nd was also at The Barn Cafe. We talked about our upcoming fundraisers for September and October.

That fundraiser will be on the 26th of September at the Barn Cafe and tickets were handed out. If you did not get any tickets yet, please call Lion Lorene. Sell, Sell, Sell. Each of us needs to also buy a few tickets to support the club. Sell them to your friends as well. To set an example, I have purchased a sheet of tickets to give/sell to my friends. I hope each of you do as well. There are 8 tickets per sheet. We have three different sheets of tickets; one for the 5:30 seating, one for the 6:30 seating and one for the 7:30 seating. We cannot pay our bills if we don’t sell tickets to our fundraisers.

As September rolls around, we have a major decision to make as to our meeting locations. The prior board voted to give The Barn Cafe a try for the first 3 months of the year. That time comes to an end on the 26th of September, the night of the fundraiser.  At our board meeting on the 19th, we will discuss our future plans for meeting at the Senior Center.      We will start the month with the Shortline Lake Dinner, thanks to Lion Sharon and Lion Don. We have our Senior Center Breakfast on the 10th. Our first general meeting of September is on the 12th at the Senior Center. As noted above, the board meeting on the 19th is at The Barn Cafe.

Our 4th Monday meeting is on the 26th at the Barn Cafe where Lion Tom will be hosting our Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser. I don’t plan on having a business meeting at that time, but will be having dinner there in support of the club.  I hope to see all of you at our upcoming activities, especially the fundraiser at The Barn Cafe on the 26th.

We also have a fundraiser scheduled at the Pavilion in Elk Grove Park on the 28th of October. It will be a Day of the Dead Carnitas Feed in honor of Halloween. Tickets will be available online by the first of September and to be handed out at the board meeting on September 19th.

By the way, did I mention that we are having a spaghetti feed fundraiser dinner on the 26th of September.

Application for Membership

Lions are in 200 countries and geographic areas. We have 45,000 clubs with over 1.3 million members world wide. We have a dynamic history. We are best known for fighting blindness — it’s part of our history as well as our work today. But we also volunteer for many different kinds of projects including disaster relief — across many borders. We serve youth. Our community projects often support local children and schools with new programs and resources. Internationally, we offer many programs.

    • We hope you will consider joining our club.
    • To become a Lion, you must be of good moral character and good reputation in our community.
    • Membership is by invitation.
    • If you’re interested in being invited to join Lions Club of Elk Grove, you may want to consider some of the following facts about Lionism:
      • Lions are active.
      • Our motto is “We Serve.”

Check to Habitat for Humanity The board approved the funding of this project using funds in the equipment sub account of the project account to assist with the purchase of equipment/supplies for the remodel project. Check needs to be sent to Habitat for Humanity by the treasurer. Lion Weaver is waiting for a bill so he can pay them.
Valley High Dinner Sept 24 Rick Schriver
Lion Rick Schriver was called from the meeting to come over to explain the event he is chairing. He explained some of the concerns the members had with this event.

New Business:

• Thank you received from Optimist Club. Was shared with board
• Set November and December meeting schedule. (One holiday dinner meeting & the board meeting) The Board will make decisions on this next month after getting feedback from other Lions.
• Consolidation of Project funds/Elimination of Equipment sub account or payback of “borrowed funds” to Equipment sub account. The board voted no consolidation of funds because it could be a problem with our non profit status.
• Will Stodden Scholarship – We will revisit this when we have funds.
• Request from American Legion Post 861 to sponsor a TV for VA houses at Mather Veteran Village $150 Each. It was the opinion of the board we do not have the funds to help with their request. We will ask the membership if they would like to make donation.
• Donation requests received from:
1. Northern Calif. Lions Sight Association at $6 per member. We have no Funds
2. Lions projects for Canine Companions. $225 We have no funds

The Speech contest in February Lion Rick and Lion John Jr. will chair again.
Due to lack of funds in our account the board will consider later to buy a table at the Delta tea and also the canine companion program.

The board voted on membership dues. It was motioned by Lion Bob Brewer and 2nd by Lion Pancho to have letter go out in April 1st for due payments. Due Payments need to be paid by June 30th or members will be dropped from the club on that date.
